"Euryale looked out from her castle, situated in the desolate and secluded land that she had chosen as her place of sanctuary, brought there by the beautiful white winged stallion called Pegasus, having journeyed through many continents to get where she now was. 'I knew I would finally be safe and this was to be my home for the rest of eternity.'"
From the pen of Susan R. Murphy comes a collection of truly terrifying tales: a blend of ancient Greek mythology, American Gothic horror, UFO abductions, Halloween scares and campfire tales.
The characters who feature in these tales are beings cursed by fate. Life and death holds no distinction for them. They wander the world, crossing continents and even galaxies, in search of sport, prey and sometimes sanctuary.
For the immortals, there can be no respite and no final resting place: they are prisoners of this world, a world which they cannot leave. Hence, some choose to become hunters, others find themselves among the hunted. They have the strength to witness, to endure and to casually inflict tragic and inhuman suffering.
"What you have witnessed here this night, no mortal has seen in over a thousand years. Your punishment will be immortality and you will be my blood companion for all eternity."
Dark Observer:
On a dark clear night, when the moon is full, be alert and watch over your children as they sleep. For the Dark Observer may be lurking outside your window and in the blink of an eye, your children may be gone. The Dark Observer comes to Earth twice a year in March and November. It comes to observe and search. Their world is many light years from our Earth. Breeding has not been permitted on their planet for many thousands of years so there is an absence of children. Their search of the galaxy has brought them here to our planet. A few earthlings are prepared to do battle with these beings, while others let their children be taken. This is a story about one brave woman who chose to stand and fight for the custody of her two small children.
Gargoyle, Thief of Souls
On a night when the moon is full, surrounded by dark clouds and a death mist flows through the graveyard, it is said that a strange mythological creature known as the Gargoyle suddenly appears, crouching on a thirty foot cross to the east. There, he snatches your soul, as it protects the graves of the dead. Its eyes will search in silence from a perch, for signs of trespassers who happen to wander by. As most people are unaware that this creature exists, their defenses are lowered making them vulnerable to this soul stealing. If accomplished, only a dead shell of a once living human remains. Being inquisitive, I am going to seek this unusual creature and see for myself it is is indeed a reality, or is it just a myth.
The Butcher of Moore Mansion
The Butcher of Moore Mansion is a repulsive tale, involving rage, butchery, insanity and hauntings. I hear the small voices in my head, saying, chop, chop them all dead, dead, dead, here a piece, there a piece, everywhere a piece, my wife is next to die, then I will cease. As Cynthia floated close, Mrs. Moore could see that her upper torso was completely intact but as she looked downward, she could see that her legs were missing. The stumps were nothing but pieces of ragged flesh and bone.
The Haunted Railroad Tracks
Being a little girl of eight and very curious, I believed in the legend of the haunted railroad tracks and the giant creatures in the zoo at the end. Annie and I were scared but we couldn't move our bodies were glued to the spot. Off in the distance and coming our way, we could make out the shape of a gigantic black creature. As it got closer, we could see the thing more clearly. It stood twenty-feet high at least. on ten spiked hairy legs.
The Lost Princess of Atlantis
As palm trees sway in the breeze and tourists frolic on the shores of white sandy beaches, KaLynn stands on the balcony of her home in Miami Beach, Florida, staring out over the Atlantic, haunting faint images start to flash in her mind from times long forgotten; a sleeping brown dragon sighs black smoke and awakes with a fiery vengeance, coughing hot molten lava bombs, the shaking of the earth that leveled marble dwellings into rubble; the racing walls of sea waves, a hundred feet high that began to roll and her beautiful island kingdom that sank beneath the sea, her home, Atlantis.
The House on Fairwood Avenue
I was immortal and required the blood of the living to survive. I killed each night quickly and silently without remorse. I swore to myself, I would never make a human into a creature such as I, and have kept this promise right up to today. I will be forever alone. The Fairwood House is now an empty lot but the aura of evil still surrounds it and no one will venture close. The new Fairwood House is located across the street now, my house. If you happen to walk by some night, you might see the beautiful white-faced Cassandra staring out the window on the second floor. Stay clear or you just might become her blood feast for the night.
